Limestone Country– Pavements & Viaducts

Start and finish near Settle from 4.30am to approx 6pm. Although the total walking distance depends upon prevailing weather and lighting conditions, I estimate that it will not exceed 8 miles and there will be fairly long photography (and refreshment!) breaks in between segments on foot. Tricky walking conditions may be encountered at times over uneven limestone pavements.

The Yorkshire Dales’ limestone pavements can be manipulated into graphic images by harnessing the alchemy between light and land to create memorable images. In direct contrast, the viaducts of the Settle-Carlisle railway convey the indomitable pioneering spirit of the Victorian engineers who sought to tame nature and by portraying the symmetry of Ribblehead and Denthead, we will be able to create a stark juxtaposition between the visual qualities of natural and manufactured stone.
